{"id":580,"date":"2012-06-18T07:33:17","date_gmt":"2012-06-17T19:33:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.kiwistreet.co.nz\/wordpress\/?p=580"},"modified":"2012-06-18T07:34:33","modified_gmt":"2012-06-17T19:34:33","slug":"truley-sic-confusing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kiwistreet.co.nz\/wordpress\/?p=580","title":{"rendered":"Truley [sic] confusing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.kiwistreet.co.nz\/wordpress\/?attachment_id=582\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-582\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-582\" title=\"TowerOfBabel\" src=\"http:\/\/www.kiwistreet.co.nz\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/TowerOfBabel-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.kiwistreet.co.nz\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/TowerOfBabel-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.kiwistreet.co.nz\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/TowerOfBabel-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.kiwistreet.co.nz\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/TowerOfBabel.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>There is an interesting debate going on in the world of words.\u00a0 On one side of the table there are those who believe that standardised spelling and a few basic rules of grammar are essential to effective communication.\u00a0 On the other side of the table is a group that believes that \u2018variants\u2019 of spelling and grammar are perfectly acceptable.<\/p>\n<p>This second group maintains that whether it\u2019s truly, truely or truley, the reader knows what the writer means.\u00a0 Or, at the very least, the reader can work out what the writer means.<\/p>\n<p>This second group also believes that, by insisting on truly, the first group is discriminating against those who have perhaps not benefitted from their encounter with the school system.\u00a0 By insisting on truly (says the second group), the first group is making life even more difficult for those for whom life is already difficult enough.<\/p>\n<p>There is even a sub-group of this second group that believes that the use of truley (or perhaps even trooli) is evidence of creativity.\u00a0 Spelling truly as truley is not wrong; it\u2019s clever and imaginative.<\/p>\n<p>I can see that this might be a valid argument if the writer of truley is aware of what he or she is doing \u2013 if they are aware that the standard spelling is truly, and if their use of the variant is intentional and for a purpose.\u00a0 But, when it\u2019s just because they know no better, I can\u2019t see that it\u2019s either clever or imaginative.<\/p>\n<p>James Joyce and Vladimir Nabokov were able to do some very clever and imaginative things with the English language \u2013 in part because they had a very good understanding of standardised spelling and the basic rules of grammar.\u00a0 To defend Shandrelle\u2019s and Troyetta\u2019s use of truley on the grounds that they were away from school on the day that the teacher covered the spelling of truly makes no sense at all.\u00a0 And to dress it up as clever and imaginative is just encouraging the proliferation of gobbledygook.<\/p>\n<p>Roll on Tower of Babel two-point-zero.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There is an interesting debate going on in the world of words.\u00a0 On one side of the table there are those who believe that standardised spelling and a few basic rules of grammar are essential to effective communication.\u00a0 On the &hellip;
