{"id":795,"date":"2013-04-22T13:29:42","date_gmt":"2013-04-22T01:29:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.kiwistreet.co.nz\/wordpress\/?p=795"},"modified":"2013-04-23T07:28:41","modified_gmt":"2013-04-22T19:28:41","slug":"anyone-can-make-the-simple-complicated","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kiwistreet.co.nz\/wordpress\/?p=795","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Anyone can make the simple complicated&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.kiwistreet.co.nz\/wordpress\/?attachment_id=794\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-794\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-794\" alt=\"charlesmingus\" src=\"http:\/\/www.kiwistreet.co.nz\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/charlesmingus-300x297.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"297\" \/><\/a>\u2018Anyone can make the simple complicated.\u00a0 Creativity is making the complicated simple.\u2019<\/em> \u2013 Charles Mingus<\/p>\n<p>I remember an exchange, several years ago now, between my boss and the CEO of one of our biggest clients.<\/p>\n<p>The CEO was questioning our fee for editing a proposal.\u00a0 \u2018The fee seems rather steep,\u2019 he said.\u00a0 \u2018I\u2019m thinking it should be about half that.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>My boss disagreed.\u00a0 \u2018It was a really complicated piece of work.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Well, maybe it was.\u00a0 It\u2019s a complicated subject.\u00a0 But what we have now is really simple.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>My boss nodded.\u00a0 \u2018Yes.\u00a0 It is.\u00a0 And how clever is that?\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes, getting from complicated to simple is itself relatively simple.\u00a0 But more often than not it takes a good deal of skill, experience, and hard work.<\/p>\n<p>I often come across managers who think that making complicated things simple devalues them.\u00a0 \u2018If we make it look too simple, the customer may think that they can do it themselves.\u00a0 They might think that they don\u2019t need us.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>But, of course, a large part of the reason for making the potentially complicated simple is to make sure that the customer comprehends that you not only understand the problem, you also have the solution.\u00a0 And if you can\u2019t communicate that \u2013 clearly and succinctly \u2013 you\u2019re probably not going to get the order.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u2018Anyone can make the simple complicated.\u00a0 Creativity is making the complicated simple.\u2019 \u2013 Charles Mingus I remember an exchange, several years ago now, between my boss and the CEO of one of our biggest clients.
