{"id":809,"date":"2013-05-07T15:48:01","date_gmt":"2013-05-07T03:48:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.kiwistreet.co.nz\/wordpress\/?p=809"},"modified":"2013-05-07T15:48:01","modified_gmt":"2013-05-07T03:48:01","slug":"whats-in-a-name","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kiwistreet.co.nz\/wordpress\/?p=809","title":{"rendered":"What\u2019s in a name?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.kiwistreet.co.nz\/wordpress\/?attachment_id=808\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-808\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-808\" alt=\"Cold Ham\" src=\"http:\/\/www.kiwistreet.co.nz\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Cold-Ham-300x101.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"101\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.kiwistreet.co.nz\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Cold-Ham-300x101.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.kiwistreet.co.nz\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Cold-Ham.jpg 396w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Back in the day (as one of my favourite reality TV characters is wont to say) I spent a few years working for an advertising agency.<\/p>\n<p>It was a time when just about every agency seemed to have its genesis in a long and liquid lunch.\u00a0 One minute Mike Pickles, David Ham, and Peter Cold were ordering their fourth bottle of Penfolds Bin Something-or-Other; the next <b>Cold, Ham &amp; Pickles (Advertising) Limited<\/b> was making a play for a serious chunk of Nestl\u00e9\u2019s advertising budget.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, what had seemed to be such a good idea over a glass or two of Shiraz didn\u2019t always turn out to be such a good idea in real life.\u00a0 Within a year or so, one of the original chums had usually folded his tent and gone off to join the alphabet soup in the building across the street.\u00a0 For a while, Cold, Ham &amp; Pickles would probably box on as Cold, Ham &amp; Pickles \u2013 only without Mr Ham.\u00a0 But then, once the stock of printed stationery was down to a manageable level, they would probably \u2018rebrand\u2019 as <b>Cold Pickles<\/b>.\u00a0 Keep it simple.<\/p>\n<p>This would be good news for Mike Pickles.\u00a0 His name would have been on the letterhead from the start.\u00a0 But people probably referred to the agency simply as Cold Ham.\u00a0 (Advertising and marketing people are like that.)\u00a0 Now, with Dave Ham a part of Dinster, Denster, Dumpster &amp; Ham, Mr Pickles\u2019 visibility would suddenly be more \u2026 well \u2026 visible.<\/p>\n<p>But another out-of-control lunch was never far away.\u00a0 And, after another four or five bottles of Bin Whatever, it would probably seem like a good idea to merge with the up-and-coming creative team of George Radish and Simon Mustard to form <b>Cold Pickles Radish &amp; Mustard<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>And maybe, for a while, the new set up would go from strength to strength, winning some important new business pitches, and picking up creative awards left, right, and centre.\u00a0 <b>CPRM<\/b> (as it probably became known) may even have been nominated for Ad Agency of the Year.<\/p>\n<p>But nothing lasts for ever.\u00a0 Over yet another long lunch, the creative genius that was Simon Mustard would probably announce that he was moving to New York.\u00a0 Or Prague.\u00a0 Or maybe Kathmandu.<\/p>\n<p>Without the magical touch of Simon, <b>CPR<\/b> (no M) could never be what it had once been.\u00a0 With a steady drift of star clients to pastures more creative, the future for CPR (no M) would begin to look decidedly less rosy.\u00a0 The options would seem few and far between.<\/p>\n<p>Over several bottles of Penfolds Bin I-Can\u2019t-Remember, the remaining partners, Pete, Mike, and George, would probably think that it made good sense to merge with Noteworthy Overend &amp; Willis.\u00a0 While Pete phoned Andrew Noteworthy to sound him out on the idea, George probably even sketched a logo for <b>CPR:NOW<\/b> on the back of the wine list.<\/p>\n<p>Sadly, by then it was usually too late.\u00a0 The patient was already as good as dead.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Back in the day (as one of my favourite reality TV characters is wont to say) I spent a few years working for an advertising agency.
