{"id":958,"date":"2014-05-08T16:32:06","date_gmt":"2014-05-08T04:32:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.kiwistreet.co.nz\/wordpress\/?p=958"},"modified":"2014-05-08T16:32:06","modified_gmt":"2014-05-08T04:32:06","slug":"clarity-takes-time","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kiwistreet.co.nz\/wordpress\/?p=958","title":{"rendered":"Clarity takes time"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.kiwistreet.co.nz\/wordpress\/?attachment_id=957\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-957\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-957\" src=\"http:\/\/www.kiwistreet.co.nz\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/bertrand-russell-239x300.jpg\" alt=\"bertrand-russell\" width=\"239\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.kiwistreet.co.nz\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/bertrand-russell-239x300.jpg 239w, https:\/\/www.kiwistreet.co.nz\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/bertrand-russell.jpg 325w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 239px) 100vw, 239px\" \/><\/a>If you have ever started out to write a clear and concise instruction, proposal, or explanation, only to find that making it clear and concise was far from easy, you are not alone.<\/p>\n<p>Bertrand Russell (a man who managed to express quite a few difficult thoughts and ideas clearly and concisely) once observed: \u2018Everything is vague to a degree you do not realise until you have tried to make it precise.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Or as a former colleague of mine was wont to say: \u2018You don\u2019t realise how little you know until you try to convey the little that you <em>think<\/em> you know to someone else.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>When I first started to earn a living as a writer, computers were machines the size of small houses, housed in special air-conditioned rooms, and tended by men in white coats.\u00a0 They were almost exclusively the domain of engineers and money men.\u00a0 We lowly writers composed our sentences on manual typewriters.\u00a0 Or, in the case of one of my colleagues, with a Black Beauty pencil on lined yellow \u2018legal\u2019 pads.<\/p>\n<p>Typically, a first draft (often based on handwritten notes) would lead to a second draft, and a third, and sometimes a fourth.\u00a0 In the end, you had something that said what you needed to say and a waste basket full of not-quite-so-successful attempts.<\/p>\n<p>Today, however, there\u2019s a tendency to bang out something as quickly as possible and press the send button.\u00a0 Time is money.\u00a0 We expect everything to happen at the speed of light.<\/p>\n<p>But if what you bang out is neither clear nor concise, the fact that you conveyed it at the speed of light counts for nothing.\u00a0 Sometimes it counts for less than nothing.\u00a0 If it doesn\u2019t inform your reader, there\u2019s a very good chance that it will misinform or confuse her.<\/p>\n<p>Electronic wizardry has simplified and sped up much of the mechanical part of the writing process.\u00a0 But clear thinking and concise composition still requires time.\u00a0 In the interests of clarity and concision, make sure that you allow yourself enough time to think carefully about what you want to say, to say it, and then to make sure that you really have said it.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>If you have ever started out to write a clear and concise instruction, proposal, or explanation, only to find that making it clear and concise was far from easy, you are not alone.
